A Horse Friend Indeed
By Maddy Butcher
Holidays agitate me.
It’s a wet blanket attitude tenderly nurtured by age and motherhood. With kids, there came more gifts to buy, more cards to send, more parties to attend, more pennies pinched.
Holidays can be like the family's evening meal – heavy on duty, light on joy. I laughed when reading Victor Borge's holiday take: "Santa had the right idea. Visit people once a year."
Cherish the season?
I was having yet another Curmudgeon Field Day when I stumbled upon the wise words of Winnie the Pooh.
“What day is it?" asked Pooh.
It's today," squeaked Piglet.
“My favorite day," said Pooh.
Just as I was about to make kindling of the Christmas ornaments and use my failed holiday nutbread as a tire chock, A. A. Milne put things into perspective.
Friends, particularly horse friends, are the tinsel on my tree this year.
This year, with the help of a friend, I reinvested in riding. I devoted time to my more challenging horses. It paid off marvelously. The horses are better and I’m more confident with them.
All I needed was encouragement and skilled rider to help iron out the kinks.
Another horse friend made it possible to get away from the farm. We live near each other and know each others' routines and animals. She made the Equine Affaire and War Horse possible.
-- Horse friends aren’t afraid to get dirty. They’ll get up early for you and stay up late.
-- They hold the flashlight as you clean a wound.
-- They sit on the stoop and drink beers with you.
-- They make plans and dreams with you.
-- They gallop into the wind with you.
-- They spit and curse with you.
-- They will help you bury a beloved.
Christopher Robin tells Pooh:
“If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together, there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart... I'll always be with you.”
Thank You, Friends!
